Reinforcing Iron and Rebar Worker

Working Title: Steel/Iron Reinforcing Worker

Supervisor: Foreman

General Description of Position: Structural rebar workers install steel reinforcement in concrete forms for cast in place concrete structures, precast concrete structures, concrete pavements and sidewalks.

Essential functions and responsibilities listed below:

  • Cut and fit wire mesh or fabric, using hooked rods, and position fabric or mesh in concrete to reinforce concrete
  • Cut rods to required lengths, using metal shears, hacksaws, bar cutters, or acetylene torches
  • Bend steel rods with hand tools and rodbending machines, and weld them with arc-welding equipment.
  • Determine quantities, sizes, shapes, and locations of reinforcing rods from blueprints, sketches, or oral instructions.
  • Position and secure steel bars, rods, cables, or mesh in concrete forms, using fasteners, rod-bending machines, blowtorches, and hand tools
  • Space and fasten together rods in forms according to blueprints, using wire and pliers
  • Place blocks, spacers and chairs under rebar to hold the bars off the deck when reinforcing floors.
  • When not performing the above essential duties and responsibilities, may assist in other operations as designated by the supervisor

Specific Equipment and Materials to be used: Operate small/medium/large hand tools, welding equipment, cutting equipment.

Safety Policies and Practices: The employee in this job must be knowledgeable about and follow the company’s safety policies and procedures as described in the company’s safety manual.

Education: High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Experience and Training: Three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work environment: The work environment/physical demands characteristics described here are representative of those the employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; and high and/ or precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
