PLEASURE ISLAND - A road that provides access to Pleasure Island has reopened nearly two years after Hurricane Ike devastated the area.

The Corps of Engineers has finished repairs to the North Levee Road on Pleasure Island.

The work is part of a $15 million project to rebuild the roads, raise the levees and make other improvements.

The South Levee Road is scheduled to reopen in February or March.

Both highways are important to people who enjoy fishing and other recreational activities on the island.

Business owners like Michael Manuel of Sharky's Grill, Bait and Tackle say the repair work and road improvements are critical to the island's economy.

The roads were dedicated in the 1970's.
